Words formed from the initial letters of a phrase are called acronyms. In an acronym, the initial letters of the underlying phrase are joined together to form a new word that is pronounced as a word and not as the sequence of the individual letters.
Example: laser (light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation)
Compare: alphabetism
